Splice Video Editor for iPhone & iPod Touch (Review)

page0_blog_entry1-splice---video-editor-copy
Splice is a very feature rich and casual video editing app available for the iPhone & iPod Touch. Just like Apple’s own mobile version of iMovie, Splice tries to take iMovie and improve on avery aspect of the app, it features borders, titles, transitions, photos, and much, much more. Even though there are many video editing apps available for the iPhone & iPod Touch, Splice seems to be one of the more popular ones and looks to be a little more unique. Let’s take a closer look and see if Splice is the best video editing application on the App store today. Even though there are many video editing apps available for the iPhone & iPod Touch, Splice seems to be one of the more popular ones and looks to be a little more unique. Let’s take a closer look and see if Splice is the best video editing application on the App store today.

Features
Upon opening Splice you will find a very cool screen that has strips of film reels with the letter S on it, hence the name Splice. On the main screen you have a few options to choose from. The first being the plus button to add a new movie or slideshow. Simply tap through your photos and videos to get started on the editing process. Now that the uploading process is done. Let's get to the main attraction of Splice, and that is the editing screen, which, in my opinion, is very deep and feature rich as iMovie on the Mac, even more so, If I dare say.

You can do literally tons of different things when editing your movie. To get started, I made a title called “My Trip to Seattle” as my first video ever made in Splice. From there you can add short bits of film (that you can edit to the desired start and end time), transitions (some included are crossfade, slide left, and much more) and many other cool things. I think one of my favorite features of Splice was the Ken Burns feature, which looked absolutely gorgeous in transition from a video to a photo. Another cool thing is the addition of a few select border layouts that can be applied to your videos and photos. For a few bucks extra, you can get a bucket load of new layouts and borders as add ons.

Do you ever have that feeling were you just want to be silly? I know there are those times when I want to. Luckily, Splice has realized that and gives you the ability to speed up and speed down the movie so that your voice may sound like a chipmunk or a real deep growl. Also, for all you audio geniuses out there, Splice comes standard with audio tools that let you implement music and even your own voice over!

I forgot to mention some of the project settings that are available in Splice. You have the options of choosing HD or SD. I recommend going with HD, however, since beautiful videos made in Splice just don’t look good when in SD, of course. If you have a video or photo that was recorded in portrait mode, you can easily switch up the format so that your projects shoe up in portrait and not landscape. You can also add default transitions as well, a nifty little feature in case you don’t want to manually add in extra transitions between clips.

Final Thoughts
Even though I haven’t even covered half of what Splice is capable of, it stands to be one of the best video editors available for the iPhone & iPod Touch. I have been using this app for all my videos, and this app never fails to deliver. If you are looking for a way deeper experience than the Mobile version of iMovie, I can definitely recommend Splice. You can pick up Splice on the iTunes App Store for $1.99. Hit up the link for more info.
